I'm not surprised Eric Mangini was fired. This man squandered a playoff appearance that seemed almost inevitable. Such a mistake should carry a consequence. Many armchair Quarterbacks are blaming Brett Favre for the meltdown, but those folks are borderline delusional. Yes, its true that Favre was intercepted a lot, but rewind to last season when Chad Pennington was intercepted much in the same way. Its nothing short of a miracle that Favre took the Jets to 8-3 with such miserable pass protection. When any quarterback has to deal with a pocket that consistently collapses, or when blitzers are coming at them clean off the line, they tend to make big mistakes and they try to force things. Lots of Jets fans want to see Favre go, but I don't agree with that. Some guys think that bringing in a new QB like Matt Cassel would fix everything, but thats also hysterical. If anything, we could use the guys who protect Cassel and put them around Favre. Brett Favre would be deadly with the pass protection that Matt Cassel gets. That guy has all day to throw the ball. With Cassels protection, even Ryan Leaf could throw for 400.

Its kind of sad to see Mangini go because he did make some good progress in building the team. Last season, even Richard Simmons could have rushed for a hundred against the Jets while rocking out to "sweating to the oldies." At least thats been shored up a bit, but Mangini had to be held accountable for allowing the Jets to be eliminated from the playoffs by 3 of the leagues worst teams. It was Manginis responsibility to make adjustments in game plans and to rotate players if they weren't performing correctly, and that includes Favre. If Favre's arm was banged up during the Titans game, then Mangini should have rested him for a game.

The Jets owners are correct, this all falls on Manginis shoulders. The poor pass defense, the failure to rotate players and draw up game plans that would work. Its also obvious that Mangini underestimated threats. How else do you explain his willingness to allow Chad Pennington to go to a division rival, Miami. While the Jets weren't actually eliminated by Miami, they now pose a huge threat. "Mangenius" must have thought that Pennington was washed up and posed no threat, and thats just a microcosm of how 3 crappy teams ended up getting the better of him.

Just because a team is playing poorly doesn't mean that you can take the day off and not prepare a solid plan against them. Take the 49rs for instance, sure they stink, but if you don't plan a way to stop players like Isaac Bruce, a superbowl Champion, they will beat you to death with him. So sayonara Eric. I would like to see Parcell's come back to the Jets, but he has a nasty habit of almost getting a team to the big game and then quitting, Id rather have mean old Bill Cowher out there with his spittle cup, or Mike Holmgren would be good too.

Yesterday Pennington had 4 interceptions and a fumble I hope that wasn't Mangini fault, too

Poor Chad. It looks like "Jets Chad" showed up and imploded. His success this season with the Dolphins must have simply been the result of a soft schedule, but it wasn't totally his fault,  I was kind of suprised by Parcells calls, (yes Parcells), that guy on the sideline is just his sock puppet. Parcells virtually abandoned the ground game and allowed the Dolphins to become one dimensional. Thats a no-no against a defense like the Ravens.

As for Kiffin,I thought the team this year actually were competitive. I do think he's going to be a better college coach, though. Plus it's not going to hurt having his dad coaching the defense

When Kiffin was fired, the raiders were 1-3, but 2 of those losses were in the last minute.  That said a lot for Ryan, not Kiffin.  He will be a great college coach, and should he ever venture into the pros again, a great Pro Coach.  I was sorry to see that (but then AL Davis is senile and his actions defy logic).

As for Shell, what you fail to understand is that he is the consumate Raider.  He and Upshaw DEFINE the great Raider teams of the 70s.  He needed more time, but perhaps you are right.  Under Davis, that does not appear to be available.

Doc, if Shanahan sucks so bad why would you want him fired? Being a Raiders fan I would think you would want him to stay with Denver as long as possible.

First, let me set the record straight.  I am a Raider Fan first and foremost.  But I am also a football Fan.  Shanahan was bad for football!  He was not a good coach.  He fell into a dynasty that he managed to make a laughing stock of (sure Elway own 2 - and how many did he lose????).  HIs vindictiveness was unbecoming and detracted from the sport.  WHile I hate the deadskins, I have never hated George Allen.  He was the NFC's version of Al Davis, and I admire him.

I dont want to see the Raiders given a pass to victory.  I want them to WIN!  But win on the field against worthy opponents.  Not a bunch of whiners and losers, and that has been the Ponies for the last 20 years.  The Chargers, as vexing as the Broncos when it comes to the Raiders, have been a good team, and a worthy opponent (except for their head coach now).  But the Broncos have not been.  Now they have a chance to be.  This year just demonstrated the true nature of Shanahan.  The only reason it was not more apparent and he was not fired earlier was due to dumb luck getting the WHiner from the Colts.

Agreed. Considering who his father is (Buddy) and who else he learned under (Belichick) I'm surprised he hasn't been offered a head coaching job already.

We are not Klingon - you cannot live off the reputation of your father (but Ryan is trying).

Hey, Anthony, be prepared to change teams. Your beloved Mangini is now the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

At least, he has a better QB now.

I hope Mangini can turn things around in Cleveland. He's a good guy and I hope he does well over there. I'm wondering who the Jets will end up with. Giants Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo would probably be good... I hear Brian Billick is floating around out there, but I'm not all that enthusiastic about him. Even though Shanahan is probably the dirtiest coach in the league, I'd still like to see him on the Jets sideline smacking people in the mouth with the combo of Leon Washington and Thomas Jones.

It would also probably be good if we got the Ravens Rex Ryan. The more I think about it the more I like the sound of it. It would be great if we could get Ed Reed to come along with him
