Got used to the UI pretty quickly the!

 

With RT apps,it's always a guessing game as to whether you can let it go in the background or not.

for example, get an RT app that is supposed to catalog images.  Load it up and it says "cataloging images, please wait.." So I go to another app and do something. When I return, i find the app was paused because it wasn't The active app.  So no, I don't see RT as a good platform for PC users.

The source/my little bird?  A person I spoke with at Microsoft Sydney when I rang about a purchasing issue.  Besides, you only have to look for yourself to see how rapidly technology is changing, and that the time between Windows releases is growing shorter with each release.  It stands to reason, then, that Microsoft would want to trim its support sevices to relocate those resources to more productive tasks, so yeah, the more redundant OSes will go first, XP and Vista, then Win 7 in perhaps 2 or 3 years time.

 

When somebody comes up with this kind of thing so late in the scheme of things, it's fair to suggest that they have very recently given it a short try, cast it aside and then started pissing and moaning because their expectations weren't fulfilled.  Moreover, the people who have really give Win 8 a fair try happen to like it, so it's fair to assume little or no experience with it... or, "fuck it, I'm crabby and can't be bothered trying to learn a new OS."  Either way, it's like a 747 after landing... the whining can go on for ages afterwards.

I never knew why someone should buy win 8 for a desktop computer...

Then I bought it last week for my computer, mainly just for the leap motion.  Only 30€, why not.

Now I really started to like it and also bought the upgrade for my notebook!

It isnt that bad at all, just different. Okay, no startmenü, but as exchange, something that has the nearly same functionality (only the search field is missing) which is just bigger and has the same accessibility. I also like the Metro user interface now, it more than just having the most important software easily accessible.

The performance is amazing. How fast win 8 boots is pretty sick. When the bios of your mainboard finished, it normally only takes 2-3 seconds until you can log yourself into win 8. I do NOT have a SSD! Just a normal harddisk with sata. So in effect it takes up to 8 seconds until I am on the desktop.

I once read a blog, where win 8 was compared to 7 or even xp. There has so much negative happened and I thought only "wow, people should buy this crap?". So far I only miss aero...

But I have not dissmissed my win 7. But I mainly used Win 8 in the last days.

XP survived supported for a decade.  7 will likely do the same....so 2015 is pure bull.

The only reason I'll be loading 8 is to keep up to speed with SD's stuff....no other reason what-so-ever.

...and it won't be on this desktop... I actually need an interface that works.....

Virtual Box and the laptop will suffice....

That is 6 to 11 years of service life. I'll lean toward the later date. I won't say Windows 8 sucks, because I don't know that from personal experience. I do know that Win7 is a reliable, functional, comfortable, efficient OS and I have no need to switch to something "trendy and more modern" for little to no benefit. In fact, there may be more than just some Stardock software that isn't going to work with it that works fine on 7. I am not willing to find out what I have to give up or repurchase.

If you like Win8, good for you, use it. Hell, if XP still trips your trigger, use it.  (but at you own risk once support is dropped) but in my opinion, MS will be commiting corporate suicide if they do away with an operating system that most of the world has only recently adopted.

Never said you should...what bothers me isn't the people who don't feel like paying to upgrade (or have too much incompatible software), but the people who bash W8 for being inferior to windows 7....

I'd also point out that for many, W8 pro cost only $15....additionally, many new computers either come with W8 by default or offer it as an option...for those people who got it on a new computer (or were able to try it for free) and are complaining that it's inferior to windows 7, I seriously question their evaluation and willingness to learn new things....

I never said I was unwilling to pay for an upgrade. What I'm saying is Windows 7 is far more comfortable and efficient enough for me. But I will be sticking with Windows 7 for quite some time. 

 

see, even people that like Windows 8 say "you have to give it a fair chance", "you are not allowed to an opinion if you did not try it for at least x weeks/months" (x is always bigger than the amount of time somebody, who does not like it, spent with it).

i don't remember people this saying this about Windows XP, Windows 7, OS X, iOS etc. 

actually it means the Windows 8 UX design team has fucked it up big time. it doesn't really matter for desktops as MS has a quasi-monopoly here. but for tablets it is MS that can not afford such a long time to like it. the return policies do not permit that. the result are very high return rates of the Surface as mentioned in this article.

wow. this is sad. all the attacks towards a guy who likes win8 and wants to defend the os from haters. 'tis sad, tres sad.

and i thought i read somewhere that brad really liked his surface tablet. i guess i was mistaken.

anywho, if ya don't like it, don't use it. if ya do like it, use it till hell freezes over. maybe we should keep our opinions to ourselves. this win8 back and forth has almost reached the depth and foolishness the health care debate in here had. i still say if you only gave win8 a day or three chance and then trashed it, you didn't give it a fair shake.  ta ta!

It's obvious from the title of the thread that this is nothing but troll bait. Astonished at some of the people that bit.

Everything that needed to be said on Win8 was beat to death on another thread that lasted quite some time. This one is just re-hash.

Really?  A product that's got a codebase going back years that has to be compatible with many OSes hasn't been remade for something that's been available in a finished state for less than six months on one OS?

Thats true but nobody ever complains nobody is saying hold it we like the current OS to be supported longer bc it is stable and almost never crashes, the statistics do the reports user should make to MS ... ( i completely agree with you in terms of support in years for windows7 it is a good OS that is stable and should therefore be supported longer also windows7 is the most used windows todate) Nobody reports stuff or makes themselves the work of at least trying thats a problem a problem even Stardock knows and can probably confirm bugs dont get reported or only little of them. on windows 8 nobody reports what they like and what they do not in detail. The average user simply says F it im pressing the power button and go back to 7. MS only sees another copy sold happy customer.   

 About the time spend to get familiar and compfy with 8

i expect that if you upgrade or install windows8 and take the time to install all additional software you have,  that you at least use it for a timespan of a week... The sad thing about it is that the explanation to a new interface is almost completely missing the little tutorial that is displayed during or after the installation is just way to short ( i say it’s the reason why many say its unusable or hard to overcome i mentioned this before there should have been better tutorials from the very get go DP to RTM that explain exactly how you navigate use it and operate with hotkeys ) all of that good stuff is missing therefore i understand that many are pissed of.
windows xp was not done overnight and people already had been adjusted to the input and the UI since there was 95 and 98 enough time to get familiar with certain things and can’t be compared to a true new UI that hasn’t been there before in any version of desktop environment unless you had the benefit of MSDN account, but many just saw the CP and RTM and those were pretty much unexplained therefore so many videos about windows8 is horrible bla bla bla you get the point.

I used a surface RT and im also frustrated that some applications do not continue to work if you switch to another app to break down the time everything is loaded up but these things can only be changed and made better if they get reported... nobody reports anything to MS I’ve tried contacting them a couple of times and got redirected to Microsoft ask a question where you have to pay 60 euros to get a problem solved but all i wanted was to give them additional tips/feedback of what can be made better or be improved within windows8.There is a ton of things that could be changed and make windows8 to a real precious OS.

Multi virtual screen support the ability to lock metro apps ( multiple to the desktop ) improvements in autostart ,search functions could be redefined and made closer so that you could make a search for text inlcuded in a file (index)search without having to search via the explorer...expanding look split screen on one monitor ( windowskey +and direction key left/ right having these as multiple lock downs would be cool at least more than just the two via monitor with a option to go full screen and the ability to use it that way without using the windows sidebar to switch through them.The metro app on desktop could be multiple also with a scrollbar to scroll to the needed stuff…/ Still testing Tiles since i had a chat with ZubaZ yesterday and Tiles seem to do exactly what i wish windows8 would do.. the list goes on.

Even though I like and enjoy working with windows8 i think its not perfect and can be should be improved to match both sides standards in future release … Plate8 was simply to early released especially since there is no user tutorial from MS that explains all of it.
The list of ideas for improvements is huge but hey it’s a complete new OS and it’s not very old yet -But i hate that there is no decent way to provide ideas or tips to MS. What im trying to say here is that most people that hate on it never actually mention what they don’t like unless the three things Startbutton UI and looks. So should MS change the UI back to have one part of the party happy and upset all the guys that like the change of the  jump of an more Entertainment based and live app OS that covers a good part of information under one hood like it does currently with the live tiles  ? Even i think that an option would have been dandy to have both parts happy/ lets face it we all are one windows family and should not fight over a user interface its redicoulous lol ive seen pc console game, fights over apple and PC´s but fights over windows between windows users is new for me in that scale especially because it makes no sense at all. But if we want changes we need to report things we do n0t like in a mannered way and not like it sux or its shit nobody can read about that whats going on.Its like a little kid stomping its feet in the mall screaming because it is not getting the toy it wants but accomplishes nothing.IF you want a future improvement you have to open your mouth and try to contact MS in a large way petition as an example but we have to make it as one so both sides get happy in the end the ones that like a startbutton and startmenu and the ones that like a windows key and live startmenu its that simple fighting doesnt help until that is understood there will be no improvement and only one way the way microsoft thinks is right for the future to take.
